What can G7 Leaders learn from Colin Kapernick and Ronaldo? and reflections for the yoga mat
If the news about climate politics and gender diversity drags you down, breathe in and breathe out. Set your intentions and reflect on the yoga mat this week!
Set your intentions! But Deeds Must Come…Reflections on the G7 Meeting and the Finance Industry (for all of us!)
Walk the walk, talk the talk
Almost a week after the G7 Leaders convened in the sleepy side of the UK, what are we left with? Boris Johnson set his intentions to tackle the climate crisis and protect the environment, natural world, and wildlife, but the deeds? He mentioned the £500 million government spending he committed towards the “Blue Planet Fund”, which was disclosed in January 2020 to support developing countries to protect the marine environment and reduce poverty. Nothing new really! We need urgent and collective action and funding to tackle climate change.
And the elephant in the room: Can each country please acknowledge their responsibility according to their own emission levels? The kindergarten playground rhetoric of “I’ll only play if everyone also plays” is so yesterday! Take responsibility.
Here is a unique piece of news for all G7 Leaders out there in plain English: “If we don’t take action to drive down emissions to attain below 2.0–2.6°C by mid-century, the global GDP will be 11-14% less than in a world without climate change”!!!
The insurance company Swiss RE conducted a comprehensive study of how each country’s GDP will be impacted by climate change. Here it is:
“Economics of Climate Change: No Action Not an Option!”
Yoga Mat Reflection 1: We need government spending and determination to tackle climate change. Immediate and with ££££!
Where are all the girls?
Please take a moment to reflect on this photo! Well, your thoughts can be one of the following: “Wow, I haven’t seen anyone in work clothes for months. Do companies still sell ties and suits after the Covid?” or “There is only one female G7 Leader in this photo and when she leaves office, this is going to be an all-boys club again!” Yes, I notice the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, too. But this doesn’t change the fact!
Yoga Mat Reflection 2: We need female leadership in politics. Female leaders bring a different breath of skills and outlook to the table. Hence, female-led countries handled coronavirus better, said the analysis of 194 countries, published by the Centre for Economic Policy Research and the World Economic Forum.
What can companies learn from Ronaldo and Simon Kjaer?
You know who Ronaldo is, right? Do you know Simon Kjaer? If no, don’t worry. I didn’t know about him until last week. He is the captain of Denmark’s Football team. Last week, when his teammate Christian Eriksen collapsed, he gave him CPR before the medics. Made the team make a human wall to protect his privacy. Calmed down Eriksen’s partner. And kept things cool. Talking about OUTSTANDING leadership!
And Ronaldo pushed the Coca-Cola bottle away! Hail to the water! And Coca Cola share price declined by 1.6%, wiping off billions from the company’s market value.
Here is a lesson for marketing: Find your influencer who rises above the profits and has a purpose (apparently Ronaldo is into healthy eating nowadays!). Colin Kaepernick (my personal fav) began his peaceful protests during the national anthem by kneeling in August 2016 to protest racial inequality and the oppression of Black people in America. Nike’s stock price soared after displaying him in their 2018 ads, while some Trump supporters burned their Nike trainers.
Yoga Mat Reflection 3: Drink Water and Lead with Purpose!
Walk (run/ride) and Listen:
The distance I conquered within a few square miles is notorious during Covid. It looks like more miles are ahead of us so why not listen to something that is going to make us hopeful about the future? and Have a lovely weekend:)
